Following the successful completion of the SES mPower satellite gateway by the Av-Comm team in Dubbo, NSW, Comtech Ground Systems re-engaged Av-Comm towards the end of 2022 for the next part of this complex satellite project – the Merredin gateway, in Western Australia.
The satellite gateway, supporting the next-generation mPower constellation, was to be considered as Australia’s west-coast gateway, near identical to that of the east-coast gateway in Dubbo, and would provide additional tracking, telemetry, and control services to the mPower constellation from over 3700km west of the Dubbo gateway.
The deployment was similarly impacted by the COVID travel restrictions like the previously completed Dubbo gateway. As such, the Av-Comm advanced Field Team was only able to begin as soon as Western Australia had lifted the state emergency ruling, which finally allowed interstate workers to enter. Once again, this presented several challenges for the Av-Comm team to complete the complex project within the tight time constraints provided by the customer.
Av-Comm, selected for engineering capability, and proven track record in the successful delivery of similar satellite gateway infrastructure, successfully rose to the challenge.
The Av-Comm field team mobilised to site to begin installation of the Comtech CGC satellite antenna systems the day the COVID restrictions were lifted. The antennas installed were 5.5m Ka-Band X/Y full-motion MEO tracking systems, identical to those built at the Dubbo site. Two were installed in late 2022, with the remaining three being installed by early 2023, prior to the mPower constellation’s commercial activation and within the customer’s desired timeframe.
The Merredin installation was hampered by several complications from upstream contractors, requiring Av-Comm technicians to implement creative on-site solutions to maintain installation quality and project timelines.
Despite the challenges, the Av-Comm team successfully completed the satellite gateway installations on-time, whilst ensuring alignment and performance met SES and Comtech’s technical standards.
Av-Comm remains engaged in Level 1 engineering support for the customer, providing technical assistance and operational continuity for the gateway systems.
