Official handover of the UNSW 2400 SX Cassowary 

On the 17^th of September 2025, Av-Comm Space & Defence officially handed over one of our 2400SX Cassowary Multi-Orbit Antenna System to UNSW Sydney. This project highlights how academia can play a leading role in building and strengthening our domestic space industry, contributing world-class research while gaining hands-on access to infrastructure that supports real missions. 

The handover ceremony also reflected ongoing collaboration between Australian space SMEs and university partners, with Av-Comm CEO Michael Cratt noting that “this project demonstrates that academia and business can work together and there is a sustainable partnership here”. 

With projects and programs like the Cassowary, Av-Comm demonstrates a unique capacity to offer custom solutions and designs for Australia by Australia. Av-Comm sees this handover ceremony as representative of the ongoing knowledge transfer between industry and education, with two UNSW graduate engineers working for Av-Comm on the Cassowary project till completion.   

The Cassowary Multi-Orbit Antenna System range directly enhances local skills, technology and infrastructure, making a significant and meaningful contribution to the local supply chain. With a commitment to building Australia’s space infrastructure, the Cassowary system supports satellites in various orbits, maximising ground station capability and supporting local industry. The Cassowary antenna system is configurable to support single or multiple frequency bands, support (L, S, C, X, Ku, Ka, and V-Band*), in receive-only or transmit and receive mode. This project highlights Av-Comm’s commitment to building the Australian Space Industry’s future, with UNSW students now able to perform independent in-house tracking of their various CubeSat missions, as well as further research and observation activities.  

As the Cassowary range expands, so too does Av-Comm’s commitment to supporting university partners and the next generation of the space industry youth. Av-Comm aims to grow our internship and graduate program as well as continue supporting our “Space Tradies” program. By supporting in-roads into the industry, Av-Comm can ensure that youth get hands-on training and the opportunity to pursue their passions, whilst providing valuable products for university missions.
